A Medieval Camp Kitchen
From Il Cuoco Segreto Di Papa Pio V (The Private Chef of Pope Pius V), by Bartolomeo Scappi, Venice, 1570
A re-creation of a camp kitchen seems to be an obvious part of creating a more Medieval environment. It's an idea hatched several years ago at the first CooksCon in Colorado Springs, CO - that having spent many years developing skills re-creating period recipes, the next obvious thing would be to re-create those recipes using period technologies. I started with the pictures of Caroline's kitchen from that first CooksCon, and then discovered that there are several groups that also use period kitchens as part of their re-creations. (See Links at the end of this page.)

It took about a year to assemble enough of the kitchen to be functional. The kitchen first traveled with us to Estrella war in February of 2005, and was used to cook a meal for about ten people. The kitchen was used again as the feast kitchen for Mountain Mayhem in May of 2005, and featured the addition of a wrought iron spit rack for roasting meat. Every time we take the kitchen to an event, the mass increases somewhat with the addition of equipment. We're to the point where the kitchen fills the minivan (leaving seating for just the driver and one passenger), so taking other camping equipment to an event will require a trailer in the future.

Each of the links below represent an event where we used the kitchen, and will take you to more pictures, the menu, and analysis from the event.  I'm trying to document each time the kitchen is used, but I am missing pictures. If you have pictures, I'd love to have them.
